GSA Announces Dr. Mariam Jashi as Its New Designated CEO

Today, the Global Sepsis Alliance is excited to announce that Dr. Mariam Jashi will join the GSA as its new CEO on February 1, 2024.

Mariam is a senior-level policymaker with 25 years of experience in global health, sustainable development, and innovative financing from the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA), the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.

For 8 years (2012-2020), she served as a senior government official in Georgia as the Deputy Minister of Health, Member of Parliament (MP), Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee for Education and Science, Member of the Health Committee and Gender Equality Council of the Parliament.

In 2017-2018 – as the President of the leading group on innovative financing for development – she led high-level dialogue among global stakeholders on the margins of the UN General Assemblies.

Since 2019, Mariam has been the Global Board Member and EECA Chapter Chair of the UNITE Parliamentarians’ Network for Global Health. She has chaired the Board of Advisors at the Tbilisi Medical Academy since 2021 and is the elected Secretary General of the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) for the 2022-2025 Triennium.

Her earlier experience includes 12 years of humanitarian and development work with UNICEF, UNAIDS, other UN agencies, GAVI, and the World Bank (1999-2012), being in charge of the UNICEF Health Sector and UNAIDS program in Georgia, Immunization Portfolio at UNICEF Occupied Palestinian Territory, and HIV Partnerships at UNICEF New York HQ.

The Mason Fellow of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Mariam holds an MPA degree from Harvard University, a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from AIETI Medical School, a Master of Public Health (MPA) from Tbilisi State University, and Public Health Certificates from Lund University and UCL.

Major Achievements

  • Led strategic planning and mobilization of 105 million USD in grants for national health programs of 19 countries from GAVI, the Global Fund, GAIN, UNITAID, USAID, and the Government of Japan

  • Recipient of the World Health Organization Award for contribution to Polio eradication in Europe

  • CEO and co-founder of the Solidarity Fund of Georgia, under the Prime Minister’s Office, that mobilized > 8 million GEL of Innovative Financing for diagnostics and treatment of children affected by cancer

  • Co-author of the Universal Health Care reform and program in Georgia with > 90% coverage of the country's population, and

  • Lead author of TISIFF Recommendations, the global roadmap on how to galvanize Innovative Financing and narrow the funding gap for Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

We are incredibly excited that Mariam has chosen to join our global fight against sepsis, bringing a wealth of experience, innovation, and contagious enthusiasm that will undoubtedly propel both the GSA as well as the global fight against sepsis to new heights.
